Mother of Curl – Koa Electric Bass

This is a one of a kind electric bass I built for myself a few years ago. Its body shape is influenced by a 40’s Gibson arch top guitar.
Its semi- hollow body is made from the curliest koa ever. The tree was felled on Oahu to make way for the H-3 freeway. The logger who processed the wood named the tree ‘the Mother of Curl Tree’.
The neck is made of Honduran Mahogany and is shaped to Jazz Bass dimensions with a ‘normal’ 34” scale length. It has an ebony fingerboard and big fat frets. The tuners are Grovers, I believe the tailpiece is a Gotoh but it’s been a number of years since I have built this. The pickups are lip-stick tubes and sound great.
The neck is a bolt on style attachment with the truss rod access at the base of the neck. The instrument is very well designed and built. It is strong and stable.
