Alternate Tunings Intro

Uka-Ray-Ray Interview

KALX is the radio station of the University of California, Berkeley. It is operated by community members and students and is the best place to have fun in broadcast audio.

From spinning records on air, to working in the 80,000 volume music library to producing material for radio there’s lots to do in the station.
All of our produced shows are made in-house. I have created loads of little productions for the station in the form of Public Service Announcements, promotions and Station ID’s but the biggest and best thing I am producing is a monthly show I’ve created and launched called "Alternate Tunings".

Alternate Tunings is a pre-recorded half-hour program devoted to lesser known and unusual musical instruments. With explanations, interviews, musical examples and more, each episode presents a new instrument to the listener. It's fun, it’s educational, it's Berkeley college radio in fine form.
Amongst the instruments we’ve covered so far are the Harpsichord, Theremin, Didgeridoo, Bicycle Music Beat-boxing and the Carillon.

Each episode culminates with a piece called "The Ukulele Minute". And while not literally a minute long, it is a song played by the Bay Area's best ukulele musicians.
We are currently producing the show once a calendar month. Listen for it on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 9:00 AM Pacific time. Tune into 90.7 on your FM dial and if you’re out of the area KALX has a live web-stream at http://kalx.berkeley.edu/listen.htm.
